Genoa, Milan agree Antonini, Birsa swap deal

Genoa have announced the signing of Milan full-back Luca Antonini in a swap deal that will see winger Valter Birsa move the other way.

Antonini had been mooted as a possible target for Premier League side Sunderland, but has now decided to join Genoa on a three-year deal.

He made over 100 appearances for Milan, scoring just one goal, since beginning his career at San Siro in 2000.

The 31-year old was loaned out to a series of clubs during his time with the Serie A outfit, including Sampdoria, Modena and Siena.

He became a particular favourite with coach Massimiliano Allegri, who installed him as first choice left-back for the 2010-11 season, where he helped his side to their 18th league title.

In an emotional tweet, he told fans: After 23 years in Rossonero…

Korkut chosen as surprise Schmidt successor by Leverkusen

Tayfun Korkut has been appointed Roger Schmidt s replacement as Bayer Leverkusen coach until the end of the season.

Schmidt was dismissed on Sunday, 24 hours on from the 6-2 hammering at Borussia Dortmund that saw the club s board lose patience and left Leverkusen trailing the top four by 11 points.

Former Turkey international Korkut has been charged with steadying the ship, as Leverkusen at least attempt to haul themselves back into contention for European football.

However, his appointment is not likely to result in a swell of anticipation with the 42-year-old s two most recent jobs leaving a lot to be desired.

The Stuttgart-born coach spent just under a year-and-a-half at Hannover before being sacked in April 2015, with his final match coincidentally a…

Madrid send Odegaard on loan to Heerenveen

Heerenveen have announced the imminent arrival of Norwegian youth prospect Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid.

The Eredivisie side have not revealed how long the loan agreement covers, though it has been reported that the deal may stretch until the end of the 2017-18 season.

Odegaard shot into the public eye after making his debut at Stromsgodset in 2014, later that year becoming Norway s youngest senior international when he appeared in a friendly against the United Arab Emirates aged 15 years and 253 days.

Madrid secured the youngster s signature shortly after his 16th birthday in January 2015, but he has since made just two first-team appearances having spent the majority of his time in the Castilla set-up.

Odegaard will be presented at the Abe L…

Pioli lauds Milan´s ´stubbornness and determination´ after dramatic victory

Milan head coach Stefano Pioli praised the way his team played with stubbornness and determination after two injury-time goals from Fode Ballo-Toure and Rafael Leao gave them a 3-1 victory at Empoli.

Pioli s side went in front through Ante Rebic just over 10 minutes from time, but a superb 92nd-minute free-kick from Nedim Bajrami looked to have earned the hosts a point.

However, 105 seconds after Milan had conceded the equaliser, Ballo-Toure turned in Rade Krunic s flick-on to make it 2-1, before Leao made sure of the three points with a delicate dink over Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

The Rossoneri remain within striking distance of Serie A leaders Napoli, just three points behind, and Pioli spoke after the game of his players team spirit.

No ´instant´ solutions for Liverpool woes, admits Klopp ahead of Rangers clash

Jurgen Klopp says there are no instant solutions in football as Liverpool look to bounce back ahead of their Champions League clash with Rangers.

The Reds failed to turn their rough form around upon their return to Premier League action this weekend when they were held to a 3-3 draw by Brighton and Hove Albion.

With just one win in their last four games across all competitions, Klopp s side FA Cup and EFL Cup winners last term as well as Champions League finalists risk falling short on multiple fronts this term.

But the German feels his side will be able to work out their problems, stating they must go back to the basics and that they cannot expect an immediate revival of fortunes.

We realised after Napoli it was a real low point, and we had to change th…

German wingers plan to ´tear apart´ Socceroos

Germany s wingers on Thursday revealed their plan to pepper the Australian defence with enough crosses to tear them apart in Sunday s World Cup clash.

The Socceroos and the Germans, who are favourites to win Group D, meet at Durban Stadium in their opening game of the tournament this weekend.

Germany are set to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Cologne s Lukas Podolski likely to start on the left wing with Mesut Oezil playing just behind the striker and Hamburg s Piotr Trochowski on the right.

But Bremen s Marko Marin could also play a role having proven his worth off the bench in Germany s warm-up win against Bosnia last week with a series of darting runs which stretched the defence.

Debate is raging in Germany whether Miroslav Klose, the top scorer at the …
