Man Utd are out to prove a point after Spurs 6-1 – Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is pretty, pretty sure his Manchester United players will be looking to prove a point when they visit Tottenham on Sunday.

United lost the reverse fixture 6-1 at Old Trafford, their joint-heaviest Premier League defeat and worst since another home humbling in the 2011 Manchester derby.

Spurs looked like title contenders while United were marooned in the bottom half of the table, their hapless display in which Anthony Martial was sent off described by former captain Gary Neville as spineless and absolutely pathetic .

But United have recovered to sit second in the table, albeit 14 points behind Manchester City, while Tottenham are sixth.

Jose Mourinho s men are desperate for points but will face motivated opponents at Tottenham Hotspur …

Guardiola on EFL Cup: Do not scrap it or UEFA and FIFA will just create something else

There is little point in scrapping the EFL Cup because UEFA and FIFA would just create another competition in its place, according to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

City face Chelsea in the third round of the competition at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday and should they progress, their next game in the competition would be scheduled for the week commencing December 19.

That would cause selection headaches for many competing teams as the World Cup final takes place on December 18.

If England decide to play this competition [the EFL Cup] then we play this competition because if we don t play the competition, UEFA and FIFA are going to create a new competition. That s for sure, Guardiola said at a press conference on Tuesday.

They re not going to …

Ange Postecoglou grateful to Eddie Howe for journey to Tottenham

Ange Postecoglou admits he owes Newcastle boss Eddie Howe a thank you for his unintended role in his journey to Tottenham.

Sunday will see Postecoglou and Howe go head-to-head for the first time, but back in the summer of 2021 they were the talk of Glasgow.

Howe was widely expected to take the vacant Celtic role only to turn it down following prolonged negotiations, which resulted in Postecoglou getting the nod.

The Australian never looked back and after he won five trophies during his two-year stay in Scotland, it convinced Spurs to give the 58-year-old his first opportunity to be a Premier League manager.

“Oh absolutely, sliding doors moment,” Postecoglou acknowledged.

“There’s probably been no bigger decision in me being here today than…

Prediction: Villarreal vs Real Madrid

Best Odds: 6/11

Bookmaker:

Hoping to find a route back to the top of the La Liga table, Real Madrid will make the trip to European contenders Villarreal on Saturday afternoon.

Villarreal

Starting with the hosts, marking their return to La Liga duties on New Year s Eve as they claimed a 2-1 victory at home against Valencia, it is no secret that Villarreal have a top-six finish on their wishlist this season. Last seen earlier in the week extending on their Copa del Rey adventure thanks to a rampant 5-1 win away at Segunda outfit Cartagena, Quique Setien s men will now be hoping to find some stability in 2023. While the Yellow Submarine might have entered the World Cup s winter break with a 1-0 victory away at Espanyol on November 9th, the one-time Barcelona boss …

´The best thing about the game was the result´ – Klopp frustrated with below-par Liverpool display

Jurgen Klopp conceded Liverpool must be happy with a point after a really bad game against Fulham.

The Reds, who looked sharp in defeating Manchester City 3-1 in last week s Community Shield, were unable to hit their best form on Saturday as they opened their Premier League campaign with a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage.

Aleksandar Mitrovic scored Fulham s opener in the first half, but Liverpool hit back through substitute Darwin Nunez s first Premier League goal.

Mitrovic then became the first player to score twice for a promoted team on the opening day of a Premier League season since Steve Mounie for Huddersfield Town in 2017 when he netted from the penalty spot after drawing a foul from Virgil van Dijk.

Yet Liverpool had the resolve to restore parity for …

Aliou Cisse insists Senegal will not underestimate Ivory Coast in AFCON last 16

Aliou Cisse refused to be drawn on whether he is managing the best Senegal team in history, insisting the Africa Cup of Nations holders will be brought back down to earth if they lose to Ivory Coast in the last 16 on Monday.

Senegal lifted the trophy for the first time in 2021 under the stewardship of Cisse and topped Group C this time around with three wins from as many matches.

They face Ivory Coast for a place in the quarter-finals, with the hosts limping through to the knockout rounds as one of the best third-placed teams.

Cisse has an experienced squad of players and boasts the likes of Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, Pape Matar Sarr of Tottenham and captain Kalidou Koulibaly.

Asked if he was overseeing the best Senegal side of all time, Cisse repli…

There will be no shortage of sub-plots when Chelsea take on Liverpool for the first silverware of the season in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Each coming off tumultuous campaigns last season, fortunes this season have diverged with one challenging on all fronts whilst the other labours to rediscover former glories.

The PA news agency looks at the talking points.

Liverpool’s injury list

It was confirmed on Tuesday that Diogo Jota and Alisson would be out for significant periods while Curtis Jones also joins Trent Alexander-Arnold, Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip on the absent list for Sunday.

There is no guarantee that Darwin Nunez, who like Jones and Jota was withdrawn in Saturday’s win over Brentford, or Dominik Szoboszlai will be fit …

Guardiola eyes Madrid hat-trick, Emery record a worry for Liverpool – Champions League in Opta numbe

Manchester City and Liverpool will put their epic Premier League title race on hold for a few days, as they have the small matter of the Champions League semi-finals to think about.

City are hoping to go one better than last year after losing in the final to Chelsea. Standing in their way in the last four are Real Madrid, who eliminated the holders in the quarter-finals and boast a striker in Karim Benzema who has 12 goals in nine Champions League appearances this season.

Also facing LaLiga opposition are Liverpool, though Villarreal are unlikely to be a team they expected to meet at this stage of the competition.

Led by a knockout football specialist in Unai Emery, Villarreal cannot be taken lightly by the Reds, even with Emery s men historically struggling in …
