Prediction: Germany vs Italy

Verdict: Italy to qualify

Best Odds:

Bookmaker:

Without a doubt the most interesting clash in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals will see World Cup holders Germany take on Euro 2012 finalists Italy. Both sides recorded convincing wins in the previous stage, but the Azzurri probably head into the match in better spirits having impressed to beat Spain at Saint Denis.

Germany

Germany had been far from impressive in the Euro 2016 qualifiers and warm-up games for the tournament finals, which caused many to start doubting their chances of going all the way in France. In all fairness, Joachim Low’s side played below par in the group stage, but, as that usually happens, Die Mannschaft hit top form in the best possible time. Germany turned on the style against ver…

Real Madrid and Barcelona want Skriniar – agency

Real Madrid and Barcelona want to sign Milan Skriniar, according to Mithat Halis and the agency who represent the Inter defender.

Skriniar swapped Sampdoria for Serie A rivals Inter in 2017 and the Slovakia international has established himself as one of the best centre-backs in the world.

The 24-year-old has been linked with Premier League giants Manchester United previously, but he could join Madrid or LaLiga champions Barca at the end of the season.

Real Madrid want to sign him, so do Barcelona. If they manage to convince Inter, they could sign him this summer, Halis – who works for Stars Friends – told Spanish paper As.

Skriniar is a great professional. If Real Madrid really want him, they will try, but there are many cannibalistic agents who tr…

Anthony Martial linked with Real Madrid switch

Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid are said to be exploring an option to sign Manchester United winger Anthony Martial.

The French forward endured a torrid time at Old Trafford last season but is currently impressing with confident displays despite still not having a guaranteed place in the starting line-up under Jose Mourinho.

Martial joined Manchester United in 2015 but is yet to prove his true value despite the huge potential.

Spanish media outlets report that Martial could be tempted to a move away from United for a chance to prove himself at a possibly higher level – with reigning Champions League holders Real Madrid.

Los Blancos are struggling in the attacking department with Cristiano Ronaldo and karim Benzema on just two La Liga goals apiece this s…

Defeat ends Republic of Ireland hopes of extending debut World Cup campaign

Republic of Ireland’s hopes of reaching the World Cup last 16 came to an end as Canada came from behind to beat Vera Pauw’s side 2-1 in their second group game in Perth.

Ireland, who had opened what is their debut campaign at a major tournament finals with last week’s 1-0 loss to co-hosts Australia, were set for an historic victory after captain Katie McCabe gave them an early lead, audaciously scoring direct from a corner in the fourth minute.

But things turned around as a Megan Connolly own goal restored parity in first-half stoppage time, and Adriana Leon then put Canada in front eight minutes into the second half.

Donadoni expects Italy to shock Spain

Former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has backed Cesare Prandelli s side to pull off a shock victory against Spain at Euro 2012 on Sunday.

Vicente del Bosque s talent-laden world champions are widely expected to pick up an easy win over the crisis-hit Azzurri side, whose preparations have been affected by the controversies of the recent Scommessopoli match-fixing scandal.

However, Donadoni, whose reign in charge of his country was ended by a penalty shootout defeat to Spain in Euro 2008, believes the current crop of Italy players are more than capable of defying the odds by taking the game to the Spaniards.

We can beat Xavi, Iniestia and co. by attacking, Donadoni, told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Spain are as strong as they were four years ago, but they h…

Adelaide get Bunyodkor, Guangzhou to meet Al Ittihad

Adelaide United will renew their rivalry with Bunyodkor after being drawn to face the Uzbek champions in the AFC Champions League quarter-finals.

John Kosmina s team, officially under the guidance of assistant coach Luciano Trani, overcame Bunyodkor on the way to the 2008 final, which they lost to J.League giants Gamba Osaka.

The A-League outfit will welcome David Carney s Bunyodkor, who they beat once and also drew against in the group stages, to Hindmarsh Stadium for the first leg on September 19.

If the Reds are again victorious, they will face the winner of the Ulsan-Al Hilal last-eight clash.

In further good news for Adelaide, they will host the final to be played on either November 9 or 10 if they win their way through.

Stones: Senior stars guiding City through tense run-in

Manchester City are experiencing a very different Premier League run-in this season, with John Stones revealing they have had to lean on the likes of Vincent Kompany for guidance.

City cruised to the title in 2017-18, yet they look set to be pushed all the way by Liverpool this term, with Pep Guardiola s men just a point ahead with two games remaining.

Stones was one of a number of City players to win the league for the first time last season and so he, along with several team-mates, has not previously had to deal with the presence of a rival like Liverpool.

However, Kompany, David Silva and Sergio Aguero have held off Manchester United and Liverpool in the past and boast invaluable experience.

It s a different scenario. Last season, the league was don…

Last season wasn´t good enough – Mata lays down challenge to Manchester United

Juan Mata has challenged Manchester United to improve in the coming season after admitting they were not up to standard in 2018-19.

United finished sixth and failed to win a trophy for the second consecutive season, with Jose Mourinho sacked in December and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer unable to salvage success despite a strong start in the Old Trafford dugout.

The Red Devils failure to lift a first piece of silverware since the 2016 Europa League was made worse as they had to endure fierce rivals Manchester City completing a domestic treble and Liverpool winning the Champions League.

It means Mata, who signed a new two-year deal in June with the option to extend for a further year, is desperate to see some improvement in the coming months.

We know that last se…

Kjaer and medics receive UEFA award for saving Eriksen

Simon Kjaer and the medical team who acted rapidly to tend to Christian Eriksen following a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 have been recognised with the 2021 UEFA President s Award.

Eriksen collapsed during Denmark s opener against Finland in June, with Kjaer the first on the scene to place his team-mate in the recovery position before leading his side to form a protective screen while the Inter man received treatment.

The 29-year-old was subsequently taken to hospital, where he was fitted with a pacemaker before returning home, though it remains unclear if he will ever play again, despite visiting Inter s training ground in August.

For Kjaer s exemplary leadership, the centre-back – along with eight medics – have been hailed as the true heroes of Euro 2020 and…
