Sampdoria 1-2 Milan: Rossoneri maintain unbeaten start despite Leao red card

Milan withstood Rafael Leao s red card early in the second half to beat Sampdoria 2-1 and maintain their unbeaten start to the Serie A season.

Stefano Pioli s champions were dominant in the first half at Stadio Luigi Ferraris and went in at the break a goal up thanks to Junior Messias  early strike – his first of the season.

However, Leao received a second yellow card two minutes after half-time for a high foot, giving Samp the impetus to level through Filip Djuricic shortly before the hour mark.

Rather than concede again, though, Milan snatched all three points in the 67th minute when Olivier Giroud slammed in from the penalty spot after Gonzalo Villar had handled in the area.

So it s confirmed, doesn t just score bangers!

Silva advises Melo for Gunners move

Former Arsenal player and captain Gilberto Silva has advised his Brazilian team-mate Felipe Melo to make a move for the London based club.

The Fiorentina midfielder has been linked with a move from the Serie A club to Emirates Stadium this summer, with rumors going strong after the midfielder s good display in the domestic campaign, followed by the recent success at the Confederations Cup 2009.

But last week his spokesman told the player is settled in Italy.

However, team-mate Gilberto, who left the Gunners for Panathinaikos last summer, has spoken with his compatriot Melo and suggested he should sign for Arsenal.

We heard rumours and he asked me. I said it s a fantastic club and if he s interested he should go without thinking, said Gilberto.

Jacob tells Pompey fans to lay-off Al-Faraj

Portsmouth s executive director, Mark Jacob, has called on the south coast side s fans to stop giving owner Ali Al-Faraj a hard time, saying he had saved the club from administration.

Saudi businessman Al-Faraj has been nicknamed Al-Mirage by some supporters, having yet to visit the club s Fratton Park home ground since taking over the cash-strapped side in October.

Portsmouth who lifted the FA Cup in 2008 but have seen most of that squad leave since are four points adrift at the bottom of the English Premier League but their off-field problems so far this season have, arguably, been worse than anything that s happened on the pitch.

Before the campaign started, Portsmouth were hampered by the protracted takeover of the club by the UAE-based Sulaiman Al-Fahim fro…

Klopp over Ancelotti for Liverpool, says Carragher

As the speculation begins surrounding Brendan Rodgers replacement at Liverpool, club legend Jamie Carragher has expressed his desire to see Jurgen Klopp appointed rather than Carlo Ancelotti.

Rodgers was sacked on Sunday following Liverpool s 1-1 Premier League draw with city rivals Everton at Goodison Park.

After almost guiding Liverpool to the title in 2013-14, Rodgers paid the price for a disappointing subsequent campaign and a below-par opening to 2015-16.

Early media reports have suggested that former AC Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Ancelotti will be the next man to lead the Anfield club, but Carragher hopes to see ex-Borussia Dortmund coach Klopp given a chance.

If it was me, I d go for Klopp ahead of Ancelotti, Carragher said as part of hi…

Fabinho: I´ll try to convince Mbappe to join Liverpool

Persuading Kylian Mbappe to leave French champions Paris Saint-Germain and join Liverpool is on the agenda for Reds recruit Fabinho.

Brazilian midfielder Fabinho swapped Ligue 1 outfit Monaco for Liverpool in a deal reportedly worth €50million in the close-season.

Now Fabinho wants former Monaco team-mate and World Cup winner Mbappe – who has committed his future to PSG amid links with Real Madrid – to join him at Anfield.

Mbappe took Russia 2018 by storm, the 19-year-old sensation scoring four goals to claim the best young player of the tournament.

He [Mbappe] has already said this season he will remain at PSG, but I will try slowly to convince him to come over, Fabinho said.

´Records are there to be broken´ – Andrew Cole thrilled for Man City star Haaland

Andrew Cole is thrilled to have seen Erling Haaland break the long-standing Premier League record he shared with Alan Shearer.

Haaland netted his 35th league goal of the season in Manchester City s 3-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday.

That saw the 22-year-old set the new record for goals in a single Premier League season, which was previously set by Cole, who was then at Newcastle United, in the 1993-94 campaign, and matched by Alan Shearer a year later – the duo both scored 34 times.

Cole, who spent time with both Manchester clubs in his career though is remembered best for his time at United, is not precious over his place in the record books being taken.

He told Stats Perform: Records are there to be broken, it s that simple. When people have mentione…

Fletcher swayed by Fergie’s words of wisdom

Scotland skipper Darren Fletcher has said he considered leaving Manchester United before a few timely words from coach Sir Alex Ferguson persuaded him to stay.

Fletcher s soul-searching followed being left out of the 2008 Champions League final triumph over Chelsea and his failure to hold down a regular place in the Old Trafford Premier League starting lineup.

Several clubs were interested in him notably Birmingham, whose manager Alex McLeish knew Fletcher well from being manager of the Scottish national side and it just needed the player to take the initiative.

But Ferguson was determined to ensure that did not happen.

And how right that observation proved to be given Fletcher is now firmly established as one of the most effective midfielders in the Pre…

Bayer Leverkusen v Bayern Munich: Attention lies elsewhere for champions

Newly crowned Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich are sure to have one eye on their UEFA Champions League semi-final despite a tough trip to Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Pep Guardiola s men who won the league last week will have to pick themselves up after a disappointing semi-final exit on penalties to rivals Borussia Dortmund in Tuesday s DFB Pokal semi-final.

Bayern, who reached the last four after defeating Leverkusen in their own penalty shootout, missed all four spot-kicks they had against Dortmund.

So despite Bayern s total dominance of German football this season, they may end up with just one trophy if Barcelona bundle them out of Europe s premier club competition in a tie that begins at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

For that reason alone, Bayern s trip t…
